Keyword Clustering
Keyword clustering means grouping similar search terms so one page covers one group. That way two of your URLs do not compete with each other for the same query.
The tool
Try it here
Use this when you have a keyword list and you are about to write “a page for each term.” Cluster first. Then assign one URL per group.
Why it helps
Why you need a Keyword Clustering
If /demo and /product-demo both target “product demo,” they compete. Google often picks one and ignores the other. That is cannibalisation: you compete with yourself.
A cluster is queries a searcher would be happy to see answered on the same page. “utm builder” and “utm parameters” can share a guide. “utm builder” and “roas calculator” should not.
Intent still matters. Informational and transactional terms in one cluster often need two pages, even if the words look similar.
When
When to use it
- After a keyword export, before the content calendar.
- When two blog posts rank for the same query and neither sits in the top spots.
- When you are mapping hub pages and money pages for internal links.
- Before you generate titles. The title belongs to the cluster, not to one leftover synonym.
How
How to use it
- 1Paste your keyword list. One term per line.
- 2Group terms that share the same job and the same likely landing page.
- 3Give each group one URL (existing or planned). Do not assign two URLs to one group.
- 4Run leftover “buy” vs “what is” terms through the intent classifier. Split if the job is different.
- 5Then write one title and one H1 for that URL, using the main term in the cluster.
Example
Example: Acme keywords into pages
Acme has a demo page, a UTM tool, and a blog. The list mixed product terms with tracking terms. Campaign google-in-demo-exact-2026q3 should not steal the UTM article’s queries.
You put in
- Keywords
- product demo, book a demo, acme demo, utm builder, utm parameters, campaign utm, google ads headline limit
You get
Cluster A - https://acme.com/demo product demo, book a demo, acme demo Cluster B - https://acme.com/blog/utm-parameters-explained utm builder, utm parameters, campaign utm Cluster C - https://acme.com/blog/google-ads-character-limits google ads headline limit
Three pages, three jobs. Do not publish a fourth URL called /product-demo-booking that repeats Cluster A. Link from the UTM article to /demo with a clear anchor when you are ready.
Result
What this changes for you
Each page has a clear job. You stop splitting ranking power across two thin URLs that say the same thing.
Common mistakes
- One URL per synonym. You will publish ten overlapping posts and none will win.
- Dumping every keyword onto the homepage. The homepage cannot rank for all of them well.
- Mixing “what is UTM” with “book a demo” in one cluster. Different intent, different page.
- Never updating the map. New posts keep landing on the same head term.
FAQ
Keyword Clustering FAQ
What is keyword clustering?
Keyword clustering is grouping similar search queries so one page covers one group. You pick a primary URL per group instead of writing a separate page for every synonym.
Why does keyword clustering matter for SEO?
Without clusters, two of your pages often target the same query. They compete. Clustering gives each URL a job and makes internal links and titles easier to write.
How many keywords should be in a cluster?
As many as the page can honestly answer. A tight cluster might be 5–20 terms. If a term needs a different format (calculator vs guide vs pricing), it belongs in another cluster.
What is keyword cannibalization?
Cannibalization is when two of your URLs compete for the same query. Clustering - one page per group - is how you avoid it.
