Social Media Character Counter

Each network cuts text in a different place. X is 280. LinkedIn posts can be long but the fold is short. Instagram captions hide after two lines. Count before you paste.

Use this when one draft will be reused on X, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook or YouTube. Check each limit. Then cut.

Why it helps

Why you need a Social Media Character Counter

X (Twitter) is 280 characters including spaces and the URL. A LinkedIn paragraph will not fit.

Instagram and Facebook show a short preview. YouTube titles cap at 100. One box cannot be “the post” for all five.

Spaces count. Emoji can count as more than one character. Count here, then paste.

THE FOLD IS THE ADTHE FOLD IS THE ADX280IG / FB~125 before moreYouTubetitle 100If the offer sits behind See more, cold traffic never reads it.Count before you paste. After you post, the platform will not warn you.
Hashtags are not a strategy. Length is a constraint.

When

When to use it

  • You wrote one post and plan to paste it everywhere.
  • When an X draft looks fine on desktop and dies on mobile.
  • When a YouTube title was reused from an SEO title and you are not sure it fits 100.

How

How to use it

  1. 1Paste the text. Pick the network or read all counts.
  2. 2If it is over, cut from the end. Keep the offer in the first line.
  3. 3Shorten the URL with a tagged link, not a mystery shortener you cannot report on.
  4. 4Copy the passing version for that network. Do not force one string into every box.

Example

Example: one offer, three lengths

Acme wants the same demo message on X and LinkedIn. Campaign google-in-demo-exact-2026q3. URL is tagged.

You put in

Draft
Book a 30-minute Acme product demo. See one campaign name in Google Ads, the UTM, and your Monday report. Free to browse. https://acme.com/demo

You get

X: trim to the offer + URL so you stay ≤280.
LinkedIn: the full draft can stay; keep the offer in sentence one.
YouTube title: too long - use the title analyzer instead.

The LinkedIn version can keep the proof sentence. X needs a cut. The YouTube title is a different job. Count, then split the drafts.

Result

What this changes for you

The offer still shows after the cut. You stop finding out on a phone that the CTA was character 310.

Common mistakes

  • Treating LinkedIn’s 3,000 as a target. People still scan the first lines.
  • A URL that eats half of the 280 on X because you pasted a long query string without need.
  • Counting without the link, then adding the link after.
  • Using this for Google Ads RSA. RSA is 30 and 90. Use the Ads checkers.

FAQ

Social Media Character Counter FAQ

What does a social character counter check?

Character counts for X, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Spaces count. You see what will be cut before you post.

What is the X limit in a social character counter?

280 characters per post, including spaces and usually the URL. If you are over, cut the body. Keep the offer and the link.

Does a social character counter replace a Google Ads checker?

No. Google RSA headlines are 30 characters and descriptions are 90. Meta ads have their own preview cuts. Use the ad tools for ads.

Should I write to the max in a social character counter?

No. Fit the offer in the first lines. The max is a ceiling. A 280-character X post that buries the URL still fails.
