Campaign Naming Generator
A campaign name is a label you reuse in Google Ads, Meta, the UTM (tags on a link) and the spreadsheet. If those four disagree, you cannot add the numbers. Name it once. Then paste it everywhere.
The tool
Try it here
Use this before you open the ads UI. Name the campaign once. Then reuse that string as utm_campaign.
Why it helps
Why you need a Campaign Naming Generator
Ads managers type whatever felt clear on Tuesday: Brand Exact IN, brand_exact, Brand-Exact-India. Those are three campaigns in a pivot table.
The name is not marketing copy. It is a key. Lowercase, hyphens or underscores - pick one and do not mix. This generator uses hyphens to match the UTM builder.
A good name encodes channel, geo, offer and match type so a teammate can read it. google-in-demo-exact-2026q3 is readable. Q3 push is not.
When
When to use it
- The hour before spend: you know the offer, the geo and the channel.
- When two people are about to launch “the same” campaign from two accounts.
- When last quarter’s export cannot be summed because the names drifted.
How
How to use it
- 1Pick channel (google, meta, linkedin, email, youtube). That is who spends.
- 2Pick geo (in, us, uk, ae, global). Use the market you are actually buying, not the HQ country.
- 3Type the offer as a short slug: demo, trial, webinar, pricing. Not the full headline.
- 4Pick intent: brand, prospect, retarget, launch. For search, add match: exact, phrase, broad.
- 5Add a period: 2026q3 or 202608. Copy the name. Paste it into the ads UI and into the UTM builder as utm_campaign.
Example
Example: Meta retargeting for a webinar
Same webinar as the Google campaign, different channel. Do not reuse the Google name. Channel is part of the key.
You put in
- Channel
- meta
- Geo
- in
- Offer
- webinar
- Intent
- retarget
- Period
- 2026q3
You get
meta-in-webinar-retarget-2026q3
In the sheet, google-in-webinar-prospect-2026q3 and meta-in-webinar-retarget-2026q3 sit on two rows. You can still filter offer=webinar. You cannot do that if both were named Webinar Push.
Result
What this changes for you
Weekly reports roll up. Next month you can run the same path without a new deck that redefines the names.
Common mistakes
- Spaces and capitals. The ads UI allows them. Your UTM and CSV will not treat them as the same name.
- Putting the RSA headline (RSA = Google’s multi-headline search ad) in the campaign name. Headlines rotate. The campaign should not.
- One campaign named “always on” that mixes brand and non-brand. You will never know which is cheap.
- Date in the display name only (“March”) with no year. Next March you will have two.
FAQ
Campaign Naming Generator FAQ
What makes a good campaign name?
A string a junior can read in six months: channel, geo, offer, intent, period. Lowercase. Hyphens. No slogans.
Should the campaign name match utm_campaign?
Yes. That is the whole point. If Google Ads says meta-in-webinar-retarget-2026q3 and the URL says Webinar_Q3, the report will not roll up.
Hyphens or underscores in campaign names?
Pick one team-wide. GrowingAlgo uses hyphens so the name pastes cleanly into UTMs. Do not mix hyphen and underscore in one account.
How long can a campaign name be?
Short enough to see in the ads UI without cutting off the useful part. If you need a long note, that belongs in the brief, not the name.
